4 weeks, 4 camps – that’s how Boxerwood rolls. Our first two camps led children on story-telling adventures while the last two camps celebrated our heroes: the trees. More than 80 kids ages 4 - 10 skipped, hopped, and jumped through the delights of it all. |
🌸 Last Call for Spring Giving 🌸 |
As spring draws to a close, we’re making one final heartfelt appeal to those who love our woods, water, and wonder. Your support keeps the trails clear, the garden blooming, and the laughter of children echoing through the woods. Whether you've walked the Fairy Forest, explored the wetlands, or just believe in the magic of outdoor education — now is the time to hop on the bus. Every gift, big or small, nurtures our mission and grows the future of Boxerwood. From the bottom of our roots — thank you for being part of the journey.

BOXERWOOD RISING: Robbie Gardner, Wind Farm Developer |
Throughout our 25th year, we’ll be sharing stories of young people whose Boxerwood experiences shaped their passions and vocations. Have a young friend to recommend? Contact Catherine Epstein, creator of this series: catherine@boxerwood.org

Twenty years ago, Robbie Gardner, then age nine, attended one of Boxerwood’s summer camps. The days were filled with a range of nature activities, and the young campers even had a sleepover. But when his mom came to pick him up the next morning, “I just cried and cried," Robbie remembered. “I didn’t want to leave and go home,” he explained, “even though we lived like a 10-minute walk away.” Reflecting on what made him so sad to leave, he said, “I think it was just the fact that the whole day was spent in this beautiful place where there was learning going on the whole time."

PARTNER IN THE PICTURE: Enderly Heights Elementary School
|
Enderly Heights Elementary School educates children in grades 2-5 living in Buena Vista. The school also operates a beloved afterschool and summer program called BEST, one of three 21st Century Community Learning Centers (CCLCs) in our area, which is supported by state and federal funds. Boxerwood and BEST have enjoyed a partnership for many years, resulting in a plethora of nature-based clubs and camps. This summer, a national grant secured by Boxerwood enabled BEST campers to travel to Boxerwood for two weeks of woodland adventures – we also took a bus to JMU with family members to visit another fine arboretum (see photo). This funding also enabled us to hire four BV high school interns as assistant camp counselors. The teens are also part of our ongoing BV Cool Trees Project, and thus brought enthusiasm for urban community forestry to their work with kids. Thank you, Enderly, for making all these opportunities possible! |
