Sepember 16 2023

Dear ::subscriber.first_name::,

Follow Boxerwood’s taproot, and you’ll hit creativity. While vision, imagination, and play run through all our programs, every once in a blue moon, something especially unforgettable blooms. This year it’s our outdoor happening: “Spectacle – A Wild Notion,” Oct. 14-15, the focus of September's special edition NewsLeaf.

Months in the making, this homegrown wonder is part dream, part balm, part giant puppet marvel. Through music, dance, and art, this performance summons all of us to live more boldly for one another and for our splendiforous planet. That’s a Wild Notion indeed  – let’s rise!

Yours for a thriving world,

Your Boxerwood Friends

A Community Harvest

After months of planning and production, Spectacle 2023: A Wild Notion is almost here. It’s not just a Boxerwood show, though. It’s a community-wide celebration spanning months of hard work and whimsy, undertaken by humans big and small.

Spectacle: What, Why Now, How?
by Stephanie Hodde, Spectacle artistic director

So what does it mean, for a young person right now, to go into the wild when the wild feels scary? What can be discovered by doing what we fear, reaching out for help, and connecting to the natural world?

The Story Behind the Story
by Catherine Epstein, Spectacle playwright

What makes a good story? We often think about action and events, but just as important are the characters who perform those actions and experience those events. We knew that the characters in A Wild Notion had to be interesting, complex, and recognizable. We also knew that these characters would be middle schoolers, and that we might need to bring in some experts in that field.

Puppet Universe

For months volunteer artists have been fashioning lions and foxes, starbursts, giant mushrooms, and more. The wild wonders are still in all states of semi-emergence – enjoy the sneak peek.

Support Outdoor Experiences for Kids

“I’ve never stood in a river before!” said one 5th grader during a recent program at Glen Maury Park. “I didn’t know I could paint something so beautiful,” said another. Just two of more than 300 children who have already connected with Boxerwood this fall: children whose experiences you support with your gift to the Boxerwood Education Foundation (BEF). Thank you to all who have already donated. The annual education appeal ends Sept. 30. Give today!

PARTNER IN THE PICTURE: Spectacle Co-Creators and Funders

The Spectacle is sponsored in part by grants from the Virginia Commission for the Arts, Washington and Lee University, and Virginia Tourism Corporation.

Bringing the Spectacle to life has involved folks from all over our community. We are especially grateful to our public school partners in Buena Vista City, Lexington City, and Rockbridge County who helped Boxerwood integrate this creative endeavor into various afterschool programs and camps over the last six months. Many thanks also go to Halestone Dance Studio for providing space, dancers, and choreography for the show.

And finally, we dedicate this show to our late friend, artist Devan Malore, who shared our proclivity to pursue a Wild Notion or two. Donations made in Devan's memory helped to produce the Spectacle. Not all those who wander this wild world are lost.

Boxerwood's mission is to educate and inspire people of all ages towards becoming environmentally responsible stewards of the Earth.
